Tangier to Cap Spartel
Private Half-Day Tour to Cap Spartel & the Caves of Hercules
Cap Spartel sits only about 15km from central Tangier, at the point where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea — one of the easiest and most scenic half-day trips from the city, especially combined with the nearby Caves of Hercules.
What you’ll see
Your driver takes you to the 19th-century Cap Spartel lighthouse, with panoramic views across the strait toward Spain on a clear day, then on to the Caves of Hercules — a natural and partly carved sea cave with an opening famously shaped like the map of Africa.
The Lighthouse at the Edge of Two Seas
Built under Sultan Mohammed IV between 1863 and 1865, the Cap Spartel lighthouse is the oldest in Morocco and still stands exactly where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean. For nearly a century its upkeep was funded jointly by several foreign powers, including Britain, France, Spain, and Italy — an unusual international arrangement that lasted until Moroccan independence in 1956. In 2023 the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation (IALA) named it a Heritage Lighthouse of the Year, and since 2021 the site has housed Morocco’s National Lighthouse and Maritime Signaling Museum, open to visitors.
The Legend of the Caves of Hercules
Local legend holds that Hercules rested in these caves before setting off on his eleventh labour — retrieving the golden apples of the Hesperides, said to have grown nearby at Lixus. The caves have two openings: one facing inland, and one facing the sea, shaped unmistakably like a map of Africa. Some local guides attribute the sea-facing opening to centuries of hand quarrying; most historians treat this as folklore rather than confirmed history, but the resemblance is striking enough that it has become the site’s signature photo.
How the tour works
This is a private, flexible outing rather than a fixed-schedule bus tour: your driver waits while you explore each stop, and the route can be adjusted on the day — add time at the lighthouse, linger longer in the caves, or stop at Achakar beach along the coast road.
Good to combine with
Because the drive is short, Cap Spartel pairs naturally with a half-day or full-day Tangier city tour — the medina, Kasbah, and American Legation Museum — giving you a full day covering both the city and the coast without rushing either. If you have more time in Tangier, a day trip to Chefchaouen is another popular half-day to full-day excursion.
Pricing
Tour pricing depends on duration and vehicle choice; a half-day tour typically covers 3 to 4 hours including both stops. Entrance fees at the caves are paid on site and aren’t included in the transfer price. We confirm the full quote before you book.
